I'm amazed you hadn't heard about Ping the Duck, since the whole theme of that story is about being left behind. I wonder if the idea has somehow become embedded in our culture like a spirit whose original body has been left behind, so that only the abstract idea of a left-behind duck remans. Hmm. That's a good plate of theoretical spaghetti.
